Plainfield is a small town in Otsego County, New York, in the northwest corner of the county. It was first settled around 1793 and formed from part of Richfield in 1799. The town covers about 29.5 square miles, all land, and the Unadilla River forms its western border.

State Route 51 runs north-south in the eastern part of Plainfield.

As of the 2010 census, 915 people lived there, with an estimated 867 in 2016, giving a population density of about 29 people per square mile.

In 2000, there were 986 people in 355 households. The community was largely White. The median household income was about $34,500, with a per capita income around $14,800; about 9% of families and 12% of the population were below the poverty line.
