Wheebin standing stone
Wheebin Standing Stone, also known as Stane o’ Quoybune, is a tall ancient standing stone in the parish of Birsay on the mainland of Orkney, Scotland. It was built in the 2nd millennium BC, during the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.
The stone is about 3.5 meters high and about 1.5 meters wide, thinning to around 0.4 meters thick. It leans slightly toward the north-northwest and has a deep crack from the middle to the top. The lower half has been polished by animals rubbing against it over the years. It was originally moved from nearby higher ground and stood with its long axis running from north-northwest to south-southeast.
Location: It sits in a field on private land, about 1.5 km southeast of the village of Birsay, near the western edge of Loch of Boardhouse.
Age: Dating to around 2000 BC (Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age).
Protection: The site is a scheduled monument since 1937 and is managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
