Fifth government of Francisco Franco
5th government of Francisco Franco (1957–1962)
The fifth government of Francisco Franco ran Spain from 25 February 1957 to 11 July 1962, about five years and four months. Franco was both head of state and prime minister. The cabinet had 19 members across 18 ministers and was led by the one-party state of FET y de las JONS, with ministers from the military, the National Catholic Association of Propagandists (ACNP), and other allied civil servants. For the first time, several technocrats from Opus Dei joined the government.
A new Ministry of Housing was created. The Council of Ministers consisted of the prime minister’s office and 18 ministries, plus one minister without portfolio and the office of the presidency’s undersecretary.
The government operated within the Francoist one-party system and worked with the Cortes Españolas (the 5th, 6th and 7th Cortes). Budgets during its term covered 1958–59, 1960–61, and 1962–63. It followed the Franco IV government and was succeeded by Franco VI.
