Walter Joseph Meserve
Walter Joseph Meserve (March 10, 1923 – November 5, 2023) was an American academic, playwright, critic, and author who wrote about theater. He was a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. His An Outline History of American Drama is considered a compact, useful guide for teachers, critics, and students of modern drama. The American Historical Review praised his study of American drama in the Andrew Jackson era for its careful scholarship and energy, while noting that Meserve sometimes held back from embracing new ideas. Meserve died in Brooklin, Maine, on November 5, 2023, at the age of 100.
