Wally Fulweiler
Wally Fulweiler is an American marine biogeochemist. She earned a BA in international studies from the University of Vermont in 2000, an MS in oceanography from the University of Rhode Island in 2003, and a PhD in 2007 under Scott Nixon. Her doctoral work explored how climate change affects benthic-pelagic coupling and biogeochemical cycling in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
She joined Boston University in 2008 and became a full professor in 2021. Her research focuses on nutrients and energy flow in marine ecosystems. Early work on Narragansett Bay examined warming effects, the role of bacteria in adding nitrogen, and the fluxes of silica and carbon. She also studies nitrogen runoff, what controls nitrogen in the environment, and how to include nitrogen cycling in biogeochemical models. She speaks about COVID-19’s impact on women in science, higher education, and the relationship between science and politics.
Her awards include the Sloan Research Fellowship (2012), the Cronin Award (2013), URI’s Rising Star recognition (2015), and ASLO fellow (2016).
