From January 2, 2005, to January 1, 2009, the 15th Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico served after the 2004 elections. The New Progressive Party (NPP) held the majority in both chambers. In June 2005, the Senate was composed of 17 NPP, 9 PDP, and 1 PIP. This Assembly marked only the second time in Puerto Rico’s history that the Legislature’s majority was different from the Governor’s party. The first such split happened in 1969–1972 (House NPP, Senate PDP, Governor Luis A. Ferré, NPP). The other occurred in 1981–1984 (Governor Carlos Romero Barceló, NPP; Senate PDP and House PDP). The Assembly also held meetings about Puerto Rico’s political status.
