Mobile Museum of Art
The Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) is an art museum in Mobile, Alabama. Founded in 1963 as a public-private venture, it later became the only accredited art museum in south Alabama. The museum holds more than 6,400 artworks from the United States, Europe, and non-Western regions, including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, works on paper, and crafts.
Located in the city-owned Langan Park, MMofA underwent a $15 million expansion in 2002, growing to 86,444 square feet on 9.3 acres.
The collection is shown in three main galleries: the Mary and Charles Rodning Gallery of Asian Art, the Katharine C. Cochrane Gallery of American Art, and the Maisel Gallery of European Art. The Asian collection spans from ancient Chinese bronzes and ceramics to early 20th-century works; the American Gallery features furniture, sculpture, and paintings dating from about 1770 onward; and the European Gallery covers a broad range of European paintings, prints, sculpture, and decorative arts.
MMofA hosts exhibitions and multi-disciplinary programs, including film, poetry, and dance, and offers studio art classes for all ages. The museum presents rotating exhibitions with regional artists as well as nationally and internationally recognized artists.
It participates in reciprocal museum programs with other institutions, including the North American Reciprocal Museums and the Southeastern Reciprocal Membership programs, giving visitors access to many museums with a single membership.
History highlights include the Annual Outdoor Arts and Crafts Fair, run with the Art Patrons League, which helped fund acquisitions. In 2001 Elise Haverty and Dr. J. Rhodes Haverty of Atlanta donated their first glass gift; their collection now totals more than 183 pieces.
