WBHJ
WBHJ is a Birmingham-area radio station at 95.7 FM, known as 95.7 Jamz. It is licensed to Midfield, Alabama, and serves the Birmingham metro area with an urban-leaning, rhythmic contemporary format. The station is owned by SummitMedia and shares studios in the Cahaba neighborhood of southeast Birmingham. Its transmitter sits on Red Mountain, giving it a stronger signal for local listeners. WBHJ also broadcasts in HD Radio, with HD2 rebroadcasting WAGG and HD3 carrying WayFM via translators.
History
WBHJ began in 1958 as WTBC-FM in Tuscaloosa, sister to WTBC (AM) and affiliated with Mutual Broadcasting System. In 1969 the station changed to WUOA, owned by the University of Alabama, with an adult contemporary format. In 1984 the call letters became WFFX, branding as “95.7 The Fox,” and it played modern rock. In the 1990s the station moved its operations into the Birmingham market and relocated its transmitter to a taller tower near Vance. On July 15, 1996, the station changed its call letters to WBHJ and adopted the urban contemporary format, branding itself as “95.7 Jamz.” It became one of Birmingham’s top-rated stations, with Mickey Johnson as the first Jamz program director.
Move to Red Mountain and Midfield
To improve coverage in the Birmingham area, WBHJ moved its transmitter to Red Mountain and changed its city of license to Midfield in 2005. The power was reduced from 100,000 watts to about 12,200 watts, but the higher antenna height delivered a stronger signal to the population center of Birmingham.
Ownership
For much of the early 2000s, WBHJ was part of Cox Radio. In 2012, Cox announced the sale of WBHJ and 22 other stations to SummitMedia for $66.25 million; the deal was completed on May 3, 2013. WBHJ is a Mediabase rhythmic contemporary and Nielsen urban reporter. It carries The Morning Hustle, a nationally syndicated wake-up show from WGCI in Chicago, hosted by Kyle Santillian and Lore’l.
