Stratagem of Peshawar

On 13 October 1818 near Jamrud Fort, Peshawar, the Durrani Empire, led by Azim Khan Barakzai, defeated the Nawab of Amb, Mir Nawab Khan Tanoli. Azim Khan, the half-brother of Dost Muhammad Khan, invited Mir Nawab to settle their dispute, but he was already preparing for battle. When Mir Nawab and his small force reached Jamrud, Azim Khan encircled them with a much larger army and used his guns and cannons.

The Amb army, about 600–800 men, faced a Durrani force of 40,000–45,000 and was pushed into a losing position. Mir Nawab Khan Tanoli was killed, and around 800 of his soldiers died. The campaign ended in a decisive Durrani victory, with the Nawab of Amb losing territory and effectively being wiped out. The war was mainly sparked by a tax dispute tied to Azim Khan’s mother traveling to Kashmir via Tanwal.
