Volta Region

Volta Region, also called Volta, is one of Ghana’s 16 regions. Its capital is Ho. It sits to the west of Togo and to the east of Lake Volta. The region covers about 9,500 square kilometers and has around 1.66 million people (2021 census).

People and culture
- The region is home to several ethnic groups, with the Ewe as the largest group, plus Guan, Akan, Gurma and others.
- The main languages are Ewe and English.
- Volta is known for its rich cultural displays and dances such as Agbadza, Borborbor and Zigi.
- The people are often called Voltarians.

Administration and government
- The Volta region is governed by a Regional Coordinating Council and 18 district assemblies. Each district has a Chief Executive.
- The Regional Minister as of January 2025 is James Gunu.
- In 2019, the Oti Region was created from part of Volta, reducing its number of districts.

Major towns
- Ho (capital), Anloga, Keta, Hohoe, Aflao, Sogakope, Akatsi, Juapong and Denu are some of the region’s key towns.

Health and education
- Volta Regional Hospital (in Ho) is also known as Trafalgar.
- The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho has made the area a teaching hospital since 2019.
- Other health facilities include Ho Municipal Hospital and Ho Polyclinic.

History and notes
- The region was formed from the former British Togoland, which joined the Gold Coast to become Ghana after a 1956 plebiscite.
- There is a modern campaign by some groups seeking Western Togoland to be part of a separate state.
