Battle of Kaukaba
Battle of Kaukaba
The Battle of Kaukaba was a clash during the Lebanese Civil War. On May 9, 1978, PLO fighters attacked Norwegian peacekeepers in Kaukaba, southern Lebanon, who were part of UN peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL).
It was one of the hardest battles for Norwegian soldiers in UNIFIL. The PLO fighters came within about 30 meters of the Norwegian positions before the Norwegians held the line and repelled the attack.
The Norwegians fired about 200 machine-gun rounds, 50 rounds from automatic rifles, and two grenades. The PLO fired many more rounds and several hand grenades.
Outcome: The PLO withdrew and pledged not to fire on Norwegian troops again; the Norwegians maintained their position and were considered victorious.
Casualties: Reports vary by source. Palestinian sources say 1 PLO fighter was killed and 1 wounded. Norwegian sources say up to 8 PLO fighters were killed, with at least one Norwegian soldier lightly wounded.
