Vollaro clan

The Vollaro clan is a Camorra gang based in the southeast of Naples, mainly in Portici and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio.

History and key facts
- Founded in the mid-1970s by Luigi Vollaro, nicknamed "o Califfo" (The Caliph) for his reputed power. He was arrested in 1982. Police found he had many partners and children; he once told a judge he belonged to his family, not the Camorra.
- The clan fought two Camorra wars: an internal war from roughly 1977 to 1997, and a second clash with the Cozzolino clan around 2001–2002.
- Early on, the Vollaro clan sided with the Alfieri clan against the Nuova Camorra Organizzata (NCO) and later joined the Nuova Famiglia (NF), coalitions of anti-NCO clans.

Legal cases and leadership
- Luigi Vollaro was arrested in 1982 and later sentenced to life for the 1980 murder of Giuseppe Mutillo. He received another life sentence in 2003 for the murder of Carlo Lardone.
- In 1992, Luigi Vollaro was placed under the harsh Article 41-bis prison regime. After his arrest, his sons Pietro, Giuseppe, and Raffaele ran the illegal businesses for a while; another son, Antonio, had dissociated from the family but was wrongly detained for a murder until his brother Ciro confessed as a pentito (informant).
- On June 10, 2009, five Vollaro sons were arrested, including the clan’s regent Antonio Vollaro. Investigations showed almost all of Portici paid protection money (pizzo) to the clan: shops paid hundreds to thousands of euros monthly, while street sellers paid weekly sums. Extra payments were required around holidays.

Current status and territorial fights
- The Vollaro clan has weakened over the years but remained active as of 2019, especially in Portici, its original stronghold.
- While Luigi Vollaro is in prison, authorities view Pietro Vollaro (Luigi’s son) as the current clan leader.
- After the December 23, 2019 murder of Ciro D’Anna, an associate of Carlo Vollaro, reports suggested the Vollaro clan was at war with the Mazzarella clan as Mazzarella sought to expand into Vollaro territory.

Capoclan (official and acting)
- 1970s–2015: Luigi "o Califfo" Vollaro — arrested in 1982, died in prison in 2015.
- Acting periods: 1996 (ruling panel with Giuseppe and Raffaele Vollaro; both later arrested); 1996–2009 (Antonio Vollaro; imprisoned).
- 2015–present: Pietro Vollaro — in jail.
- Acting leadership since 2015 is not clearly defined.

Informants and witnesses
- 1996: Ciro Vollaro (Luigi’s son), a cocaine addict, died in 2006.
- 1996: Francesco Di Pierno and Francesco Pariota — Luigi’s capozona (local bosses).

Overall
The Vollaro clan is a long-running Camorra family from Portici that rose to power in the 1970s, engaged in multiple conflicts, and faced many arrests over the decades. Despite weakening, it remains a recognizable player in Neapolitan organized crime, with leadership now seen as centered on Pietro Vollaro while the clan’s influence in Portici persists.
