People for Successful Corean Reunification
People for Successful Corean Reunification (PSCORE) is a non-governmental organization based in Seoul, South Korea, and Washington, D.C. Its goal is to remove obstacles to Korean reunification, help North Korean defectors, and connect South Korea, North Korea, and the international community. PSCORE brings together North and South Koreans, volunteers, and defectors to work on human rights, education, and advocacy.
Founded in October 2006 by young North Korean defectors, South Korean university students, and foreign supporters, PSCORE uses the old spelling “Corea” in its name. The group runs educational programs for North Korean defectors, reports on North Korea, and promotes discussion and understanding between the two Koreas.
Key activities and programs:
- Education for defectors: English tutoring and classes, essay writing, science and math help, and college preparation.
- Reunification and rights work: educational programs, awareness campaigns, and discussion panels; collects interviews and data on human rights abuses in North Korea to share with the public.
- News and advocacy: reports on North Korea, public statements, and international outreach.
- International engagement: holds conferences, participates in United Nations processes, and works with global partners.
Public campaigns and outreach:
- Since 2013, PSCORE has run campaigns in Seoul to educate the public about North Korea’s human rights issues, using information boards and discussions at airports, stations, and universities.
- Monthly cultural excursions for South Koreans, defectors, and foreigners to foster交流 and understanding.
- Aid for vulnerable groups: basic necessities for North Korean women defectors in China; assistance to orphaned children to obtain legal status, schooling, housing, and clothing; safety houses to protect escapees.
Events and fundraising:
- Rock out for a Good Cause rock concerts (2011–2015) at Club Freebird in Hongdae, raising funds and raising awareness.
- Model United Nations Strategic Framework Conference (Model UNSF) 2022, a platform for students and organizations to discuss North Korea in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
