Vin Mazzaro is an American professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He was born on September 27, 1986, in Hackensack, New Jersey, and grew up in Rutherford, where he helped Rutherford High School win two state championships. He bats and throws right-handed. Mazzaro was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 2005 MLB draft and was named the A’s No. 8 prospect in 2008 by Baseball America. He made his major league debut on June 2, 2009, for Oakland, earning the win in a 6 1/3‑inning, no‑run outing against the Chicago White Sox.
Mazzaro played in the majors for the Oakland Athletics (2009–2010), Kansas City Royals (2011–2012), Pittsburgh Pirates (2013–2014), Miami Marlins (2015), and San Francisco Giants (2016). Through the 2016 season, he had a 24–23 won‑loss record, a 4.79 ERA, and 233 strikeouts. A notable moment came in May 2011 when he allowed 14 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Royals in a 19–1 loss to the Indians, setting a franchise record for most runs allowed in a game by a pitcher with less than three innings.
After his time in MLB, Mazzaro continued to play in the minors and in independent leagues. He spent time with teams such as the Indianapolis Indians, New Orleans Zephyrs, Gwinnett Braves, and the Somerset Patriots. He also played for the Giants organization again in 2016, and for the Reds organization in 2017. He played for the New Jersey Jackals in 2018 and for the Long Island Ducks starting in 2019, with the 2020 season canceled by the pandemic. Mazzaro briefly retired on September 9, 2021, but returned in 2022 with the Sussex County Miners and later the Jackals. He was released by the Jackals on March 5, 2024.
