Villánykövesd, also known as Gowisch in German, is a wine village in Baranya county, Hungary. It was founded in 1730 by German settlers. For generations, many residents were Roman Catholic Danube Swabians, locally called Schwowe or Stifulder, with roots mainly from the Fulda region. After World War II, most of these German inhabitants were expelled to Germany and Austria between 1945 and 1948 under the Potsdam Agreement. Today the village is part of Hungary and is known for its wine.
