Theodore L. Eliot Jr.
Theodore Lyman Eliot Jr. (January 24, 1928 – August 8, 2019) was an American diplomat who served as the 12th U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1973 to 1978, under Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter. He also held senior positions in the State Department, including Executive Secretary (1969–1973) and Inspector General in 1978.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Eliot earned a BA from Harvard College in 1948 and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School in 1956. He later became Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and served as Secretary General for the Bilderberg Meetings from 1981 to 1993. He was a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and part of Boston’s Eliot family. Eliot died in Sonoma, California at age 91.
