Verner Nielsen
Eigil Verner Nielsen (14 May 1931 – 22 February 2023) was a Danish football defender who played 26 games for Denmark's national team. He was born in Nørresundby, Denmark. Knud Lundberg, the coach of Akademisk Boldklub (AB) in Copenhagen, spotted him during a trip to northern Jutland and brought him to AB. He was the first AB player with no academic background and became popular for his fighting spirit and good technique. Nielsen made his Denmark debut in September 1955. After retiring from playing, he ran an auto repair shop but kept playing football well into his 70s. He died on 22 February 2023 at age 91.
