The Vermont Granite Museum in Barre, Vermont, preserves and explains the region’s granite industry, an important part of the city’s economy since the late 1800s. It is located at 7 Jones Brothers Way inside the historic Jones Brothers Granite Shed, built in 1895. The shed, a straight granite shed used to cut and finish large blocks into cemetery markers, is the main surviving building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jones Brothers, founded in 1870, was Vermont’s oldest operating granite works until it closed in 1975, and the shed was acquired for the museum in 1997.

The museum also runs the Stone Arts School, offering workshops where sculptors can learn historic and modern granite-working techniques. Open for tours from June through October, with special arrangements possible at other times. Admission is charged.
