South Australia Australian rules football team
The South Australia state football team, nicknamed the Croweaters, is the representative team for South Australia in Australian rules football. It is guided by the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Home games are played at AAMI Stadium and Adelaide Oval, with other SANFL grounds also used.
History and status
South Australia has a proud interstate history. The team won the 1911 National Football Carnival and claimed two of the four Carnivals in the State of Origin era. The senior team no longer competes, but South Australia still fields underage men (with five Division 1 titles) and underage women (one Division 2 title) teams. The state has a long-standing rivalry with Victoria, and a notable, equally intense rivalry with Western Australia.
Rivalries and classic games
The SA–Victoria rivalry is the strongest, fueled by a tradition that includes signs and chants like “Kick a Vic.” Some of the greatest games in Australian football came from clashes between South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia in the 1980s and 1990s. Notable contests include dramatic finishes and high-scoring affairs that are still remembered by fans today.
Honours, culture, and other teams
Playing for South Australia is regarded as a great honour. The Fos Williams Medal is awarded to the best player from a South Australian team in interstate matches. In addition to the SANFL representative team, the South Australian Amateur Football League also has a state team, and there are Under-18 South Australian teams that compete in AFL and AFLW championships. South Australia is also represented in the E. J. Whitten Legends Game by the All-Stars team from all states except Victoria.
