University of Information Science
University of Information Science (Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, UCI), also known as the University of Informatics Sciences, is a public Cuban university and research center in Havana, in the Wajay area of the Boyeros municipality. Founded in 2002 as part of Cuba’s Future Project to computerize the country and grow its software industry, it aims to support economic development. The university uses a work-study approach, linking classroom study with real production projects from the second or third year. It offers degree programs in information technology and related fields. UCI has advanced computing facilities and is one of Cuba’s major computer centers. A notable project is Nova, a Linux distribution developed by students and professors with participation from other institutions to support Cuba’s move toward free software.
