List of Shadowrun books
This is a shorter, easy-to-understand guide to the English Shadowrun books, including core rulebooks, sourcebooks, magazines, and novels, with notes on editions and publishing.
- Editions overview
- 1st–3rd editions are fairly similar.
- 4th and the 20th Anniversary editions are quite different from the earlier ones.
- 5th edition builds on the 4th/20th era.
- 6th edition makes more core-rule changes.
- Shadowrun Anarchy is almost a different system altogether.
- Sourcebooks
- These mix rules and setting information and can be used with any edition, but some rules may need updates for newer editions.
- Foreign language sourcebooks often include local content; some books focus entirely on local material (like specific cities).
- Magazines
- There were two short-lived Shadowrun magazines:
- KA•GE (13 issues)
- Shadowland (7 issues)
- Dates and numbering
- If a book cover doesn’t show an in-game date, the issue’s date-stamp is used.
- Publishing history
- The original trade paperback was published by Contemporary Books.
- Most novels were published by ROC.
- The FASA era produced 40 novels (1990–2001).
- WizKids published six novels around 2006, loosely tied to Shadowrun Duels.
- When the FASA titles were re-released in 2003, ISBNs were updated to include FASA’s four-digit SKU (the older SKUs and ISBNs were generally not related).
- German-language editions
- German publishers Heyne and Fantasy Productions issued original German novels by German authors, set in Germany.
- They continued until 2008, when license shifts occurred.
- English-language revival and enhanced fiction
- Catalyst Game Labs announced new English Shadowrun novels starting in 2009.
- Since then, new novels, novellas, and enhanced fiction have been released regularly.
- Enhanced fiction adds character and gear statistics and adventure hooks.
- Some works are loosely connected to the final two stories in Into the Shadows.
