Soviet Union women's national artistic gymnastics team
From the 1950s until the Soviet Union dissolved, the Soviet Union women’s national artistic gymnastics team was the sport’s dominant force. They competed in nine Olympic Games (1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1988) and won the team gold at every Games they attended, with the 1984 Games skipped due to a boycott.
At the World Championships, they appeared 14 times and won team gold in all but three years—1966, 1979, and 1987—when they finished with silver. Overall, the USSR women’s team earned a total of 88 medals at the Olympics and World Championships, including 33 gold.
Larisa Latynina stands out as the most decorated female Olympic athlete, with 18 Olympic medals.
The team’s long period of dominance is often linked to heavy investment in sport to support political goals. After the Soviet Union dissolved, athletes competed for the Unified Team and won the 1992 Olympic team gold.
