University of Health Sciences (Turkey)
The University of Health Sciences (SBÜ) is a public university in Turkey, created in 2015 to oversee medical education and the network of teaching hospitals across the country. It has historical roots in the Imperial School of Medicine in Istanbul (opened in 1903) and in the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara.
History
- In March 2015, SBÜ was established.
- In April 2015, Marmara University’s Haydarpaşa Campus in Istanbul was transferred to SBÜ and became the Imperial School of Medicine Campus.
- In August 2016, the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Etlik, Ankara, joined SBÜ after its military status was removed; its education began in the 2016–17 academic year with 82 students.
Campus and structure
- SBÜ coordinates more than 50 teaching hospitals nationwide (at least 56 by 2018).
- Major campuses:
- Hamidiye Campus in Haydarpaşa, Istanbul. This is the historic Haydarpaşa site, originally built for the Imperial School of Medicine. In 2019, a presidential decree added the “Hamidiye” prefix to the faculties located there.
- Gülhane Campus in Etlik, Ankara. It houses faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
- The university also runs medical schools in several cities, including Adana, Bursa, Erzurum, İzmir, and Kayseri. It has international medicine-related faculties associated with SBÜ in Samarkand, Bukhara, Mogadishu, Aleppo, and Sarajevo.

- Faculties and institutes include: Medicine; Dentistry; Pharmacy; Nursing; Health Sciences; International Medicine; Life Sciences; Institute of Health Sciences; Institute of Sports Health and Sports Science.
Leadership
- As of 2019, the rector is Prof. Dr. Kemalettin Aydın.
