Paparazzi Productions
Paparazzi Productions was a villainous professional wrestling faction in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). It was started in 2006 by Alex Shelley, who turned his interest in wrestling videos into a ring gimmick by carrying a camera to the ring to film matches. The group grew to include Kevin Nash, with Johnny Devine joining as a production assistant; Devine would later be replaced by Austin Starr.
The idea began when Shelley started filming in October 2005. In January 2006, Jeff Jarrett hired him to help with counter-blackmail against Jackie Gayda and Sting. After Destination X, Father James Mitchell hired Shelley to stalk the wife of NWA World Heavyweight Champion Christian Cage. In May, Shelley interviewed Nash, who claimed he was the main attraction and dismissed the X Division. After the World X Cup, Shelley left Team USA to help Nash attack Chris Sabin and others, filming the attacks and helping Nash win at Slammiversary.
On June 29, 2006, Johnny Devine joined as Paparazzi Productions’ production assistant. They wrestled as a tag team on Xplosion and in an Impact! non-title match against A.J. Styles and Christopher Daniels. Nash and Shelley lost to Sabin and Lethal at Victory Road. Nash then aimed to win the X Division Championship but suffered a neck injury and sat out; Shelley filled in during his absence.
Nash returned at Bound for Glory and created the Kevin Nash Open Invitational X Division Gauntlet Battle Royal, won by the debuting Austin Starr. Nash had taken an interest in Starr, which seemed to be at Shelley's urging. In October, Shelley fired Devine for insubordination (refusing to edit German snuff films), and Nash directed Shelley to film all of Starr’s actions. Despite their tension, Nash started the Paparazzi Championship Series (PCS), an X-Division tournament.
The PCS began on December 10, 2006 at Turning Point, with contestants Shelley, Starr, Senshi, Jay Lethal, and Sonjay Dutt. Shelley and Starr showed little teamwork, and Senshi won the first challenge. The PCS featured various challenges and ended at Final Resolution, where Shelley defeated Starr to become PCS Champion. Starr then feuded with Senshi, and Shelley continued filming.
Nash started the “Paparazzi Idol” contest, with Dutt and Lethal developing characters. On the March 1 episode of Impact, Shelley and Starr teamed with X-Division Champion Chris Sabin to face Dutt, Lethal, and Jerry Lynn. They briefly seemed united, but would soon part ways again, while Nash continued to work with Dutt and Lethal. At Destination X, Starr lost to Senshi, and Shelley helped LAX beat Team 3D in a Ghetto Brawl. Shelley kept working with LAX, while Nash teamed with Lethal.
At Lockdown, Starr was defeated by Senshi and Shelley lost an Xscape match for the X-Division Championship. Starr was later released from TNA. Shelley then formed a tag team with Chris Sabin, the Motor City Machine Guns. Nash, who had initially promised to manage the duo, instead focused on Lethal and Kurt Angle.
