Fig Houses
Fig Houses is a 2010 mixed‑media collage by Indiana artist India Cruse‑Griffin. The framed piece measures 13 by 37.25 inches and is on the Eskenazi Health campus in Indianapolis, part of the Eskenazi Health Art Collection. It shows a row of houses and is made from cut magazine paper glued together, with paint added on top so parts of the original magazine show through. This technique hints at how our experiences accumulate over a lifetime.
Eskenazi Health bought Fig Houses in 2013 during a project to refresh the hospital’s art for its new campus. The artwork was selected from more than 500 proposals nationwide, after a public comment process. The work is dedicated to Greg Kelleher and Lisa E. Harris, M.D., and it is on view in the Robert & Gina Laikin Surgery Registration & Waiting Room on the third floor of Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital.
Cruse‑Griffin earned a BS in Art Education from Ball State University and has exhibited widely. She teaches art at Richmond High School, where she has won Teacher of the Year awards for 2010–2011.
