Tsaus Mountains
Tsaus Mountains
Tsaus Mountains are a small mountain range in the Sperrgebiet, the Diamond Restricted Area in the southwest of Namibia, in the Karas Region. The highest point reaches 1,107 meters. The range covers about 11 by 11 kilometers, and from the air its shape looks like the Greek letter omega (ω).
Geography and climate
The rocks are arranged in horizontal layers. Much of the landscape is sandy and easy to blow around by sandstorms. Rainfall is extremely scarce, only a few millimeters each year. Sometimes a light mist from the Atlantic forms above the coast and drifts into the desert, helping some plants survive. Camel thorn trees grow here by drawing water from deep underground.
Plants and notable discoveries
In 1995, botanist Steven Hammer and colleagues found a new Lithops plant in the southern edge of the plateau, named Lithops hermetica.

Location
