John J. McArdle

John J. McArdle, also known as Jack, was an American psychologist and professor who specialized in quantitative psychology and gerontology. Born August 24, 1951, he earned a BA from Franklin & Marshall College and an MA and PhD from Hofstra University. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Denver with John L. Horn. He taught at the University of Virginia starting in 1984, then joined the University of Southern California in 2005, where he remained a professor of psychology and gerontology, directed the CogUSC Lab, and headed USC’s Quantitative Methods training program. He was a co-principal investigator of the Health and Retirement Study. McArdle was known for his work on quantitative research methods and how aging affects cognitive function and personality. He served as president of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology (1992–1993) and of the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological & Cognitive Sciences (1996–1999). He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012. John J. McArdle passed away on February 4, 2022, at the age of 70.
