Tribunal de Justiça do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte
The Tribunal de Justiça do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (TJRN) is the highest court in the state’s judiciary, located in Natal, the capital. Its history begins in 1892. It acts as the court of appeal for decisions made by the state’s county judges. Its duties are defined in the State Constitution, Chapter VI, starting at Article 70, and include reviewing laws that go against the constitution and handling criminal cases involving authorities such as judges and mayors. Today, the court has fifteen desembargadores (chief judges). The court was created in the early republican era by Law No. 12, of June 9, 1892, approved by Governor Pedro Velho and was first named Superior Tribunal de Justiça, with five desembargadores.
