Tiden Norsk Forlag
Tiden Norsk Forlag is a Norwegian publisher owned by Gyldendal Norsk Forlag. It publishes fiction and general literature. The company began in 1933, founded by the Norwegian Labour Party, and bought Fram Forlag in 1936. Early prominent authors included Aksel Sandemose and Lars Berg, with Alf Prøysen and Anne-Cath. Vestly becoming well known after the war. During the German occupation in 1940–45, Tiden was the only publisher closed by the Nazis; its chairman Kolbjørn Fjeld was arrested and many books were confiscated or destroyed. In 1947 the company reorganized with the Labour Party, the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), and the Norwegian Union of Chemical Industry Workers as major owners. In 1991 Gyldendal acquired 91% of the company, while LO held 9%. In 2004 the remaining shares were sold to Gyldendal, and Tiden became a department of Gyldendal, though the brand stayed. The children’s and youth division merged with Gyldendal in 1996 to form Gyldendal Barn & Ungdom, which was renamed in 2004.
