Tanaproget (INN; developmental codes NSP-989, WAY-166989) is an experimental nonsteroidal progestin. It acts as a high-affinity, high-efficacy agonist of the progesterone receptor and is highly selective, which may lead to fewer side effects than many conventional steroidal progestins. As of December 2010, it was in Phase II clinical trials as a potential contraceptive developed by Ligand Pharmaceuticals. An imaging version, 4-fluoropropyltanaproget (18F), has been developed for visualizing progesterone receptors in PET scans.
