Thomas Chapman (footballer)
Thomas Chapman (1871–1929) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a half back. Born in Newtown, Powys, he was 5 ft 10 in tall. He began his career with Newtown (1890–1895) and helped them win the 1895 Welsh Cup. He then joined Manchester City (1895–1896), becoming the first former Newtown player in the Football League; he made 26 league appearances and scored 3 goals. In 1896 he moved to Grimsby Town (1896–1898), making 51 appearances. While at Grimsby he and teammate Hugh Morris played for Wales in a 4–0 defeat by England in 1897. Chapman left the Football League to join Chatham Town (1898–1901). When Chatham folded in 1901, he finished his career with Maidstone United (1901–1907). Internationally, he earned seven Wales caps between 1894 and 1897, debuting in the 1893–94 British Home Championship and playing his last match against England in 1897. He died in Chatham, England, in 1929.
