Theodoriana
Theodoriana (Greek: Θεοδώριανα) is a mountain village in western Greece, in the Arta regional unit of Epirus. Since 2011, it has been a municipal unit of the Central Tzoumerka municipality, covering about 44.4 square kilometers. The population was 348 in 2021.
Geography
Theodoriana sits among the mountains near the Pindos and Athamanian ranges. The Acheloos River flows nearby, and the GR-30 road runs from Arta to Trikala. The area is mostly forests with pine trees, and farmland in the upper valleys.
History
The village was founded around 250 BC as Theodoria by Theodorus of Athamania. The Panagia Monastery was built in 1793; during Ottoman times, a secret school operated there, and part of the monastery served as a hospital and refuge for resistance fighters.
Hydroelectric projects
From 1997, locals opposed dams planned on the two main rivers near Theodoriana. One dam was built, but many proposed dams were stopped by decisions of the local authorities.
Climate
Theodoriana has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csb) and is known for very high rainfall, about 2,529 mm per year.
In 2006, the village was featured on the TV program Menoume Ellada.
