The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) is a fun, family-friendly American animated adventure comedy based on the SpongeBob SquarePants TV show. It’s the second SpongeBob feature film.
The movie was directed by Paul Tibbitt, with a story by Stephen Hillenburg and Tibbitt. The voice cast from the show returns, and Antonio Banderas joins in a live-action role as Burger Beard, a pirate who steals the Krabby Patty secret formula using a magical book that makes writing come to life. Matt Berry also appears as a new character.
Plot in short: Burger Beard finds a magical book that lets him bring anything he writes into reality. He travels to Bikini Atoll and steals the Krabby Patty secret formula, leaving a fake document behind. SpongeBob and his friends dive into a wild adventure, including a journey to the surface world, to stop Burger Beard and recover the formula. To beat him, they travel through time, meet a cosmic dolphin named Bubbles, and even turn themselves into superheroes. In the end, they destroy the magical book, rescue Bikini Bottom, and restore the Krabby Patties.
The film combines traditional animation with live-action scenes, directed by Mike Mitchell and shot in Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. It premiered in Belgium in January 2015 and was released in the United States on February 6, 2015. The budget was about $74 million, and it grossed around $325 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing SpongeBob movie to date.
The soundtrack and music were created by John Debney, with additional songs by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. The film received generally positive reviews and appealed especially to fans of the series.
A third SpongeBob movie, Sponge on the Run, followed in 2020, continuing the adventures of SpongeBob and friends.
