The Siege of AR-558 is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode from season 7. It first aired on November 16, 1998. The story focuses on a brutal battle in the Dominion War, where Starfleet soldiers fight to keep a captured Dominion communications relay from falling back into enemy hands.

Captain Benjamin Sisko and the Defiant go to the front with supplies for a Starfleet garrison on the planet AR-558. They are joined by Quark, the Ferengi bartender, on a “fact-finding” mission to the line. The garrison is in bad shape: out of 150 soldiers, only 43 survive; the captain and first officer are dead, and Lieutenant Nadia Larkin is in command. The troops are exhausted and have not had a rest in months. They also face deadly “Houdini” mines that appear and disappear, showing up at random and killing soldiers.

Nog, Sisko’s young Ferengi nephew, joins a scouting party with Dax, Bashir, and Kellin, the garrison’s engineer. They gain some intelligence but are ambushed; Larkin is killed and Nog loses a leg. Quark questions whether Sisko cares about Nog, while Sisko argues that he cares about all the soldiers. Dax helps Kellin devise a way to make the Houdini mines visible so they can be moved away or used to slow the Jem’Hadar attack. As the Jem’Hadar press the assault, the Houdinis explode in the distance and the defenders manage to hold the installation.

The Defiant returns to evacuate the wounded and bring in fresh troops. Sisko reflects on the cost of victory and the importance of remembering the people who died, not just their names. The episode’s production code is 558, and it features guest star Bill Mumy as Kellin.

Reception and notes: The episode is widely praised. It has been listed among the best DS9 episodes by several outlets, with reviews calling it essential viewing and one of the darker, most intense entries in the Star Trek franchise.
