The Sacred Band of Stepsons
The Sacred Band of Stepsons is a fantasy series created by Janet Morris. It’s inspired by the real Sacred Band of Thebes, an elite ancient Greek unit made up of paired lovers and close friends who fought together in the 4th century BC. The Stepsons live in a myth-like world that mixes real places such as Chaeronea, Nisibis and Mygdonia with gods, philosophers and magical elements. The stories often blur history and myth while exploring how war affects personal relationships, including the presence of both homosexual and heterosexual pairs in the same fighting force.
The Stepsons first appeared in the Thieves’ World shared universe in 1981 with a story called A Man and His God. Over the years other writers added tales about Tempus, the immortal commander, and his troops. Janet Morris wrote many of the early works, sometimes with Chris Morris. The first official Stepsons novel, Beyond Sanctuary, kicked off an authorized trilogy that also includes Beyond the Veil and Beyond Wizardwall. These books were published in hardcover by Baen and through the Science Fiction Book Club, and drew praise from reviewers.
In later installments, the series expands beyond a single book cycle. The best-known recent entries include The Sacred Band (2010) and The Fish the Fighters and the Song-girl (2012). In these stories, Tempus and the Stepsons rescue twenty-three couples from the doomed Theban Sacred Band at the Battle of Chaeronea and bring them into their own ranks in Sanctuary before continuing their adventures. The group grows into a multinational cavalry force, sometimes including up to 360 fighters, with a mix of paired partners and single warriors fighting side by side. The bond between partners is strong, but joining the Stepsons doesn’t require being in a couple.
The books weave in many classical touches. Tempus is often linked to legendary heroism and ancient Greek and Near Eastern ideas, with references to philosophers like Heraclitus and Thales, and to Homeric imagery such as a distinctive leopard-skin mantle and a prized horse. The stories blend history, myth and fantasy to create a world that feels both ancient and legendary.
Critics praise the series for its grounded, realistic feel—its focus on love, loyalty and honor in war, rather than sword-and-sorcery fantasy clichés. They also note how the books reflect a thoughtful look at how ancient military life treated relationships and duty. The Sacred Band of Stepsons can be read as a complete fantasy adventure, even for readers who don’t know much about ancient history, because it builds its own mythic world while drawing on familiar classical ideas.
