The Plunderers (band)
The Plunderers were a rock band from Canberra, Australia, formed in 1984. The core members were Nic Dalton (bass and vocals) and Stevie Plunder (guitar and vocals). The lineup changed over the years, with early members including Elmo Reid on drums and Lindsay Dunbar joining in 1984, among others. Their sound blended punky power pop with sharp melodies, and they later explored more psychedelic influences.
They released several albums and mini-albums. The full albums were No Era Is Safe (1986), Half A Cow (1986), and Banana Smoothie Honey (1992), plus a live album, 13.7.91 Live! Live! Live! (1991). Their mini-albums were Trust Us (1988), Sarah’s Not Falling in Love (1990), and Home Movie (1992). They also issued singles such as Strange Affection (1985), I Don’t Mind (1988), I Didn’t Even See Them at All (1989), and Christo (1990).
The Plunderers spawned several side projects too. Hippy Dribble, a psychedelic project with Dalton and Plunder (and Milne), released the Wild Strawberri EP in 1990. Captain Denim started in 1990 to play laid-back songs. In 1992, Dalton joined The Lemonheads, and Dalton and Lewis later formed The Whitlams with Tim Freedman, while Plunder’s involvement with other bands continued.
Tragically, Stevie Plunder died in January 1996 at age 32, and Andy Lewis died in February 2000 at age 33. The band effectively ended after Plunder’s death. In 2000 Banana Smoothie, Honey was reissued with bonus tracks, and in 2008 Dalton released Last Seen Near Trafalgar 87-89, a collection of early Plunderers material.
