The One with the Embryos
The One with the Embryos is the twelfth episode of Friends’ fourth season. It first aired on January 15, 1998. In the story, Phoebe agrees to be the surrogate mother for her brother Frank Jr. and his wife Alice. Meanwhile, Chandler and Joey brag that they know Monica and Rachel better than anyone, so Ross hosts a trivia contest to find out who knows whom best. The stakes are high: if the women win, Chandler and Joey must give up their pet birds; if the men win, Monica and Rachel must give up their apartment.
Phoebe learns that the doctors will implant five of Frank and Alice’s embryos into her uterus, a procedure with a 25% chance of success. She agrees to try, even though the couple has spent all their savings on this IVF attempt. The trivia game reveals many funny details about the characters, and the men win. The friends then face moving apartments, but Phoebe’s pregnancy test comes back positive, and the mood shifts to celebration. The tag scene shows the groups dealing with the apartment switch and the birds.
The episode was directed by Kevin S. Bright and written by Jill Condon and Amy Toomin. Kudrow’s real-life pregnancy inspired the storyline, and the writers incorporated Phoebe carrying the embryos into the plot. Giovanni Ribisi and Debra Jo Rupp reprise their roles as Frank Jr. and Alice, though their schedules required some juggling. The Chick and the Duck, introduced in earlier episodes, are used to spur the main plot and the competition’s stakes.
The episode is widely regarded as one of the show’s best. It drew strong ratings (about 16.8 million households) and received critical praise. TV Guide ranked it No. 21 on its list of TV’s Top 100 Episodes of All Time, and in 2018 called it the series’ best episode. Fans and creators praise the script, pacing, and the emotional payoff when Phoebe becomes pregnant.
The One with the Embryos later appeared on The Complete Fourth Season DVD set, which includes an interactive game based on the trivia contest.
