The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Riddle of Ages
The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Riddle of Ages is a 2019 children’s novel by Trenton Lee Stewart, with illustrations by Manu Montoya. It’s the fourth book in The Mysterious Benedict Society series, coming years after the third book.
Plot: Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance return to Mr. Benedict’s home as they start to grow up. Reynie receives university letters, Sticky is offered a top science job, and Kate trains to be a secret agent like her father, Milligan. Constance has aged and her telepathy has become stronger. She guides another telepath to a place called Stonetown and must deal with the Listener, the enemy helping the Ten Men to capture them. The Ten Men want to free Mr. Curtain, while Mr. Benedict is trapped in a high-security facility called KEEP. The friends must protect a five-year-old telepath named Tai Li, who is connected to Stonetown. The Listener is Tai Li’s aunt, Dr. Claire Li.
Reception: Kirkus Reviews called the book clever with many quirks and puns, though it starts a little slowly. The American Booksellers Association named it one of their ABC Best Books for Young Readers in 2019.
