The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang
The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang is a 1974 Danish comedy and the sixth film in the Olsen Gang series. It’s directed by Erik Balling and stars Ove Sprogøe, Morten Grunwald, Poul Bundgaard, and Kirsten Walther.
After their latest heist, the Olsen Gang heads to Majorca with no money because the loot burned when Benny and Kjeld tried to hide it from the police. Egon tries to get back on track by robbing a restaurant safe, but the others fail to watch him and he’s caught. Back in Denmark, Egon is released from prison and is soon asked by a stock broker, Holm Hansen, to open a safe in Switzerland that belonged to Hansen’s late associate. Egon demands 25% of the value, and Holm Hansen agrees, but his Swiss henchman betrays him and Egon ends up left to the authorities. He escapes and returns to Denmark with Benny and Kjeld, planning revenge and payment.
The safe holds the Bedford Diamonds, a very valuable collection. Holm Hansen sells the diamonds to an Arabian Sheikh for 15 million dollars. The Olsen Gang uses a boat, a bus, and 100 balloons to steal the diamonds right from the Sheikh and his police escort. Egon wants to force Holm Hansen to pay 50% of the 15 million, but Yvonne hides the diamonds and replaces them with worthless souvenirs. Holm Hansen suspects Egon’s insanity but knows he’s clever, so he orders his henchman Bøffen to “make Egon disappear.” Egon is almost drowned, but Benny and Kjeld save him.
For a final plan, Benny and Kjeld pretend to be police officers while Egon acts the captured criminal. They confront Holm Hansen, open his safe, and replace the 15 million with the real diamonds. Realizing he’s been fooled, Holm Hansen calls the police, who arrest him for possessing the diamonds. The gang escapes to Majorca with the money, and it seems the Olsen Gang saga has reached its end.
