The Honey Moon
The Honey Moon is a play by John Tobin. It’s a light drama inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and was popular in the 1800s.
The story is set in Spain in the early 17th century. The Duke of Aranza pretends to be a poor man and tricks his new wife, Juliana, into marriage. He takes her to a small cottage to test her pride. When she agrees to follow his plan, he reveals his true identity and gives her a place in his palace as his wife.
The play was first performed on 31 January 1805 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in English. The cast included Aranza played by Robert William Elliston and Juliana by Miss Duncan. It was also staged in Edinburgh in 1809 and revived in London at Covent Garden in 1827.
