The Great Lester was the stage name of Maryan Czajkowski (September 8, 1878 – July 14, 1956). He was a pioneering Polish‑American vaudeville ventriloquist.

Lester is best known for his dummy, Frank Byron Jr., which he is said to have carved when he was young, though other carvers are also mentioned in accounts.

Known as the Grandfather of Modern-Day Ventriloquism, he helped shape the craft. He claimed to be the first to drink while his dummy spoke, but this stunt was reportedly done as early as 1821.

One famous routine had Lester calling up Heaven and Hell to find his sister. He was also the first ventriloquist to walk out into the audience while his dummy whistled.

Lester was a teacher of ventriloquism, developing a rigorous program of breathing and speech exercises. He encouraged students to tape-record their practice, and many recordings of his lessons exist. Edgar Bergen, one of the most famous ventriloquists, studied with him.

Frank Byron Jr., Lester’s main figure, is now at the Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
