The Girl Guides Association of Jamaica
The Girl Guides Association of Jamaica (GGAJ) is Jamaica’s Guiding organization for girls. Its headquarters are at 2 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10. It was founded on July 17, 1915. As of 2006, it had about 5,903 members. The GGAJ is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS); it became an associate member in 1963 and a full member in 1966.
Guiding came to Jamaica in 1915 thanks to Miss Clare Messias. After Jamaica gained independence in 1962, the Jamaican Guides stayed linked to the United Kingdom Guide Association until July 17, 1967, when the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica was created as an independent body. In 2008, a split led to the formation of the Girl Scouts of Jamaica.
The GGAJ runs programs for three age groups. A major focus is AIDS prevention. The Promise is: I promise that I will do my best, To do my duty to God, To serve the Queen and my country and help other people, And to keep the Guide Law. The motto is Be Prepared.
Leadership currently includes President Doreen Clemetson and Chief Commissioner Jean Kenny. The website is ggaj.org.
