Sugarcane (EP)
Sugarcane is Tiwa Savage's debut EP, released on September 22, 2017, by Mavin Records and 323 Entertainment. The 20-minute project features collaborations with Wizkid, Spellz, Baby Fresh, Maleek Berry and P2J, and blends Afropop, funk, house, pop, R&B and trap in English and Yoruba. The songs explore love in its many forms.
The EP was led by the singles “All Over” (April 2, 2017) and “Ma Lo” (November 3, 2017). “All Over” centers on Savage’s romantic feelings, with a Miami-shot video directed by Patrick Elis. “Ma Lo,” a Wizkid-assisted track, has a video directed by Meji Alabi filmed at the New Afrika Shrine and won Best Collabo at The Headies 2018. The title track “Sugarcane” received a colorful video on December 28, 2017. The track “Get It Now” got a video on February 22, 2018, and an Omarion-assisted remix was released in March 2018, with a video following in April 2018.
Sugarcane was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Critics generally gave the EP positive reviews, praising Savage’s songwriting, vocal performance and its strong Afropop direction. The title reflects the sweet feel of the songs and the overall vibe of the project.
