The English Mail-Coach is an essay by English writer Thomas De Quincey. It is regarded as one of his greatest works and is written in his distinctive “impassioned prose.” The essay first appeared in 1849 in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, with Part I in October and Parts II and III in December. It is divided into three sections. De Quincey had originally planned The English Mail-Coach to be part of Suspiria de Profundis. Its strong literary quality and unique voice have made it a central focus of De Quincey scholarship and criticism.
