Ruta Madre is a 2017 Mexican-American road comedy-drama directed by Agustín Castañeda. It stars David Castro, William Miller, Lia Marie Johnson, Carmen Salinas, Angélica María, Paulina Gaitán, and Paul Rodríguez. Based on a true story, it follows Daniel, a talented young Mexican-American singer, and his cynical uncle Rodrigo, who leave San Diego after Daniel’s heartbreak and set off on a road trip. Their journey goes from the U.S.–Mexico border through Tijuana and Ensenada, down the Baja California peninsula to a family ranch in Ciudad Constitución. Along the way they meet a mix of quirky characters, including a friendly witch, angels, demons, Federales, a hopeful prostitute, a strange drug dealer, and the most beautiful woman in the world. The trip blends American rock and roll with Mexican music, traditions, and landscapes.
