South African Figure Skating Championships is the country's annual national contest to crown champions. It is organized by the South African Figure Skating Association. Skaters compete in men's singles, women's singles, pairs, and ice dance at senior, junior, and novice levels. Not every discipline is held every year because of the number of participants. The championships began in 1954-55. In 1991/92, 194 skaters took part, about 25% of them were black. As South Africa began competing internationally again after a long ban was lifted, ice skating started to grow in popularity among black South Africans.
