Dayton, New Jersey
Dayton is a small community in South Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It has about 8,100 residents as of the 2020 census. The area covers roughly 2.4 square miles, with most of it land, and it uses ZIP Code 08810. Dayton sits along Route 130 on the eastern edge, about 10 miles south of New Brunswick and 7 miles north of Hightstown. It is bordered by Deans to the north and Monmouth Junction to the west, and drainage flows to Devils Brook and Lawrence Brook, which eventually reach the Millstone and Raritan Rivers. The name honors either William L. Dayton, a local attorney who became a U.S. senator, or Jonathan Dayton, a signer of the U.S. Constitution and later a senator. The area was formerly known as Cross Roads and was renamed in 1866 to avoid mail confusion. Dayton first appeared as a census-designated place in 1990 and is near major roads including Route 522, the New Jersey Turnpike, U.S. Route 1, and Route 32.
