The Dead Girls
The Dead Girls (Las muertas) is a Mexican limited TV series on Netflix. It has six episodes, each about an hour long. The show is based on the 1977 novel Las muertas by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, which itself was inspired by the real crime network Las Poquianchis. Set in 1960s Mexico, the story begins as a love tale but soon becomes a crime drama about corruption, sex trafficking, and other crimes.
The two Baladro sisters, Arcángela Baladro (played by Arcelia Ramírez) and Serafina Baladro (played by Paulina Gaitán), run a brutal brothel empire using extreme methods. Supporting cast includes Alfonso Herrera, Joaquín Cosío, and Mauricio Isaac.
The series is in Spanish and was filmed entirely in Mexico, with production taking place at Estudios Churubusco and on location in Guanajuato, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí. It is produced by Mezcala Films. Luis Estrada directed the series and served as showrunner; Ibargüengoitia’s novel was adapted for television by Estrada, Jaime Sampietro, and Rodrigo Santos. Executive producers are Estrada and Sandra Solares. Cinematography is by Alberto Anaya Adalid, known as Mándaro; editing by Mariana Rodríguez; and original music by Fernando Velázquez.
Netflix released The Dead Girls on September 10, 2025. Filming began on February 13, 2024. Estrada has said that making the series allowed a fuller, more faithful version of Ibargüengoitia’s story than a movie could, giving the story more depth with over seven hours of content. This project also marks Estrada’s first time directing an episodic series.
