The Sydney Club
The Sydney Club is a heritage-listed five‑storey building at 122 Pitt Street in Sydney’s central business district. It was built in 1886–1887 as the Commercial Bank of Australia’s premises, designed by the Mansfield Brothers in a Victorian Mannerist style. The ground floor and basement were used for banking, while the upper floors were leased to solicitors and other tenants. The building is also known as Million House.
In 1927 the Millions Club of New South Wales bought the property to support immigration and community projects. Plans were made to convert the ground floor into shops and to add more upper floors, and in 1928–29 the addition was carried out by Morrow and Gordon. The club officially opened as the Millions Club of NSW on March 11, 1929. The club was renamed The Sydney Club in 1963. In 1972 the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club joined, with a mezzanine added to serve yacht members.
The Sydney Club was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Today it remains a social club near Martin Place, noted for its architecture and its history of supporting immigrants and community causes.
