Kizilyurt
Kizilyurt is a town in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, about 53 kilometers (33 miles) northwest of Makhachkala. It sits where the Sulak River leaves the mountains and flows into the Terek-Sulak Lowland. The name comes from Kumyk words meaning “red village” (kyzyl-yurt). The town was founded in 1963 when the work settlements of Kizilyurt, Bavtugay, and Sulak were merged.
Kizilyurt is the administrative center of Kizilyurtovsky District, but it is a separate administrative unit called the Town of Kizilyurt, which includes Bavtugay, Novy Sulak, and Stary Bavtugay. Municipally, it is the Kizilyurt Urban Okrug.
The town covers about 50 square kilometers and sits about 45 meters above sea level. Population has changed over time: 32,988 (2010 census); 30,264 (2002 census); 33,682 (1989 census); with a 2021 estimate of 38,335 (about 16% higher than 2010).
Kizilyurt has a cold semi-arid climate, with cold winters, warm to hot summers, and about 381 millimeters of precipitation per year. The postal code is 368124 and the time zone is UTC+3.
